My husband and I were recently delighted to be accepted to attend Climate Reality Leadership Corps training, with the inspirational Al Gore and many, incredible activists and positive change-makers - and while strictly speaking the above **isn’t** their official tagline, it’s totally what they mean, ammiright?
I am a feminist. I believe all women are entitled to equality in all forms - i.e. culturally, economically, politically and socially. I believe all women have a right to an education, to contraception, to a career, to a vote, and to equality in their relationships.
I do not, however, believe in pushing the feminist movement in a counterintuitive manner.
All forms of extremism are forged through fear, manipulation and an acute empathy deficit, as was so repulsively demonstrated by the recent massacre of 50 Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand. Cowardly, self-serving world leaders continue to deny the rise of white nationalism and far-right extremism - which leaves us, the people, to demand the fundamental deliberative of equality, love and tolerance of ourselves.
I am not a religious person, in the sense that I am not affiliated with an organised religion - I do, however, acknowledge that there are billions of people that DO believe in organised religion and I respect their right to worship.
Surely then, in return, religious members from across the globe should be respecting my liberties to fight for a planet fit for my children to live in, love in and - should they wish to - worship in?
The 2018 Global Slavery Index report states that $127.7 billion worth of garments at risk of including modern slavery in their supply chain are imported each year by G20 countries. These imports help to bankroll a global economy that trapped 40.3 million people in modern slavery in 2016 - 71 percent of whom were women.
If you identify as a fashion-loving feminist, then you need to know the facts.
Did you know that throughout the holidays, Americans produce approximately one million tonnes of extra waste a week? Or that Australians throw away roughly 50,000 trees-worth of wrapping paper?. More alarming still is the realisation that these figures aren’t in isolation. They occur and, in fact, increase every single year.
So what can we do to stop this far-reaching festive fuck-up?
#FreeSpeech is one of the fundamental principles of a thriving democracy. Attempts to suppress the press is neither new, nor an effective long-term governing strategy. It’s been the long-established and flawed practice of parochial and prickly politicians throughout history.
Did you know that breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women and approx 1 in 1000 men?
My intelligent, hilarious, beautiful and courageous sister, Eliza, was that one in the eight. Her strength and positivity throughout her journey has been so incredibly inspiring and I’m so wonderfully proud to be her little sister.
