Clean Warrior: Alex Le Jeune

Joe Sun

Meet #CleanWarrior, Alex Le Jeune, founder and creator of kid’s circular economy sustainable swimwear label, JOE SUN . . .

WHAT IS YOUR #CLEANLIVING BRAND PHILOSOPHY?

Alex: Creating the most durable, minimal, recycled (and recyclable) swimwear with a passion for the environment at the core of everything we do.

HOW DO YOUR PRODUCTS SUPPORT A CLEAN PLANET?

Alex: The fabric used in JOE SUN  swimwear is made from 100% ECONYL® yarn - a regenerated nylon fibre derived from waste such as old carpets, discarded fishing nets, plastic components and fabric scraps. Every piece of this waste would ultimately have ended up in landfill, so it’s incredible to see it removed from our environment, cleaned and then spun into beautiful, soft and durable yarn. I do recognise however, that this is not enough and have been working with The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) to find a way to recycle our garments at the end of life. Closed loop is my ultimate outcome.

It was also paramount to design the majority of the range in unisex colours and styles, adding longevity to each piece and reducing the amount of swimwear a family needs to consume.

HOW DO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE?

Alex: As a family, we try to live a simple and conscious lifestyle - both day-to-day and when travelling. We are focused on raising two small humans with the ability to understand and accept the importance and necessity to live with less. With my business, I have challenged every aspect I can with a ‘what is the simplest, cleanest way I can do this?’ approach.

WHO ARE YOU INSPIRED BY?

Alex: I find so much inspiration in the words and passion of Dr. Zach Bush. Without sounding too melodramatic, for me, discovering his work was life changing. Yvon Chouinard (Founder of Patagonia) is also a massive inspiration in the way I run JOE SUN. His book ‘Let My People Go Surfing’ should be the blueprint for all business owners.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE NEEDED MINDSET TO FIX OUR BEAUTIFUL BLUE HOME

Alex: Strive for change 🖤
